Refurbished or new laptop: which should you buy?

· 2 min read

A brand new laptop is not always the smartest buy. For many people a good refurbished one does the same job for a lot less money. The trick is knowing which kind of buyer you are, and what to check before you pay.

When refurbished makes sense

  • Everyday work and study. Email, browsing, video calls, Word, Excel and streaming do not need the newest processor.
  • You want more specs for your budget. The same money often buys more memory and a bigger solid state drive when you buy refurbished.
  • Business-class models. Laptops made for office use are usually built tougher than budget consumer models, and they are often the best value once refurbished.

When new is the better choice

  • You edit video, run demanding design software or play the latest games, and want the newest hardware.
  • You want a full-length battery life from day one.
  • You want the longest possible warranty and an untouched machine.

What to check before you buy a refurbished laptop

  1. The warranty. Ask how long it is and who honours it. At Dealafied, refurbished computers carry a 3 to 6 month warranty.
  2. The storage type. A solid state drive (SSD) makes a laptop start and open programs far faster than an old hard drive.
  3. The memory. 8GB is a comfortable minimum for most people today.
  4. The condition. Look for a clear description of scratches or wear, and real photos of the unit.
  5. What is in the box. Make sure the charger is included.
  6. The return policy. You should be able to send it back if it is not as described.
